Are you looking to get into Accounting?

Posted on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 by How to get a Job | Accounting JobsNo comments

Here’s how to do it!

We reveal some of our top tips on how to get your perfect accounting and finance jobs.

Whether you’re looking to change your career or you have always wanted a finance related job, finding a job in finance isn’t always easy especially if you don’t have much, if any, related practical experience.

Work your way up

If you can’t start in the perfect accounting position straight away, you could look at working your way up from a more entry level position.  Consider taking a temporary accountancy job, completing an internship, finding a graduate accounting job or a junior position where you can start to learn new relevant accounting skills and gain the business finance knowledge you require to progress further.

Many Finance companies and Accountancy firms offer a variety of training schemes and apprenticeships specifically designed to help you to become either a fully qualified accountant or an experienced Accounts person through learning on-the-job.

Hone in on your relevant skills

Potential accounting and finance employers will need to see whether or not you are a suitable candidate for the role you’re applying for. So, take time to tailor your CV and covering letter for each individual job you’re applying for, ensuring you show how your experience and abilities match the person specification and job description.

Even if you haven’t got any relevant accounting experience you may have gained a load of transferable skills that you can show you do have.  Whether it’s a qualification gained in a finance related field or work experience gained within a finance company, you can demonstrate communication, negotiation, organisational, business, problem solving and numerical skills.  Knowledge, gained through work or your personal life, of any good financial practices such as record keeping, goal setting, spending plans, funds for emergencies, wise use of credit, regular savings, insurance, retirement plans and investments can also be used as excellent examples.

A sideways step

There are a number of other job sectors that are similar to finance and accounting, but sometimes don’t always need previous accounting skills and experience to get into.

An administration role, for example, that involves the inputting and processing of financial information could be the perfect stepping stone to a job in bookkeeping or payroll to help you break into a finance related role within the accounting world.
